Fluorescence microscopy is a standard technique used in most laboratories around the world in almost every area of scientific research. For decades, researchers relied on the conventional direct-current gas discharge HBO^® mercury short-arc lamp as their go-to light source.

These were later replaced by pre-aligned lamps, which were more advantageous as they contained less mercury, had longer lifetimes, and operated under a similar spectrum to mercury arc lamps but were considerably easier to install.
