We are seeking an Optical Systems Engineer, who will be responsible for designing high performance biomedical and industrial illumination systems from concept through to commercial release. It is the responsibility of the Optical Systems Engineer to provide technical leadership to a cross functional team including product managers, engineers, and scientists to deliver a product that meets commercial and regulatory requirements.

The incumbent will apply their knowledge of optical systems, lasers, LEDs, automation and thermal management to evaluate the feasibility of advanced concepts, design prototype systems and release new technology to market. Time-to-market is critical; the Optical Systems Engineer must move fluidly from the big picture to the smallest detail, removing road blocks to drive momentum.

This role demands an individual who has a well-rounded technical background including optics, a quick study, confidence to own novel challenging problems and agility to recover quickly when changing course. Additionally, we are looking for an individual who can embrace new technology and be creative in their approach to solving problems.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, develop and refine optical systems (optics, electronics, thermals, mechanical and software) for next generation solid state illumination systems through experimentation, theory and modeling.
  • Stay up to date with state-of-the-art optical and thermal technologies. Communicate developments with internal engineering, marketing and external clients via presentations then plan next steps.
  • Lead a team in designing prototypes to test new concepts and transfer technology into new and existing products. Systems will typically include LEDs, lenses, software, thermal management and electronics controls.       Prototype design may also include commercial considerations related to schedule, functionality, safety and cost.
  • Take on tasks living outside other departmental roles, such as test automation, spectral filter selection and thermal system design using such tools as LightTools and Ansys Icepak.
  • Own system architecture documentation (design reviews, risk analysis, commercial specification validation). Thoroughly assess the ability of proposed designs to meet specified requirements, including manufacturability and risk of failure/harm.
  • Program custom simulations and models for project specific problems or create automated test equipment for specific project goals.
  • Lead feasibility studies for new projects and address both technical / project management issues. Apply project management principles to define deliverables, schedules, and track progress at this stage.

 

Qualifications:

  • Strong leader with 5 years’ practical experience in system design and technical leadership.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Physics or Engineering (required) with post graduate studies in Applied Optics or Optical Engineering.
  • Solid background designing, modeling, prototyping and testing optical and thermal systems.  
  • Proficiency in either: Python, MATLAB or LabVIEW. With experience interfacing with hardware.
  • Proficiency in the use of advanced modeling software (ASAP, LightTools, Zemax, IcePak or equivalent).
  • Resourceful problem solver who is able to work around technical obstacles and will be adept at the implementation of practical solutions.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to efficiently evaluate, prioritize and handle multiple and changing projects and priorities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interpret and summarize scientific results in a clear, concise, accurate manner.
  • Self-starter with excellent attitude, initiative and passion for delivering the best.
