Mid-Distance Presence Detection

Webinar: Mid-distance presence detection
Presenter
Prometeusz Jasinski, Applications Engineer, Infrared Detection at Excelitas Technologies
Video Duration
1 hour

When it comes to low-power human recognition, pyroelectric passive IR sensors have proven to be the most optimal solution. With the proper lens design, motion can be easily detected over several tens of meters. However, designing a lens into a thin device is a real challenge.

Capacitive sensors and proximity sensors are widely used to measure the presence of humans in the range of about 50 cm. The longer the detection distance, the higher the power consumption making these active sensors not suitable for longer distances in battery operated applications. In this webinar, we will discuss how passive infrared sensors, such as the Excelitas CaliPileTM, are highly effective for longer distance detection, without any additional lens. The CaliPile multi-function thermopile sensor is designed to operate with a power consumption of about 50µW while providing a sensitivity range of up to three (3) meters without the need for additional optics.
