Excelitas Expands CaliPile Thermopile Sensor Family with Compact Sensor for Wearables and IoT Devices

CaliPile Mini combines non-contact temperature measurement and wear-status detection in the family’s smallest sensor

CaliPile™ MiniExcelitas®, a leading industrial technology company enabling precision instrumentation, sensing and controls, advanced automation and performance materials that deliver current and next-generation innovations that enrich lives, today announced CaliPile™ Mini, the most compact thermopile sensor in its CaliPile product family. The new sensor combines non-contact temperature measurement with wear-status detection for wearables and IoT devices where board space is limited.

CaliPile Mini measures ambient temperature and detects object temperature without physical contact by sensing the far-infrared radiation emitted by objects. Each unit is individually pre-calibrated at the factory and can achieve medical-grade accuracy for both measurements. Its design suppresses potential error signals caused by thermal shock or changing environmental conditions.

Designed for smart watches, glasses, rings and other connected devices, CaliPile Mini can detect whether a device is being worn, helping designers manage power consumption. Its fast response to changes in wear status allows devices to recognize when they are put on or taken off more quickly than contact-based temperature sensing technologies.

“Wearable devices need to recognize when they are in use while making the most of limited space and battery power,” said Hermann Karagoezoglu, Product Manager at Excelitas. “CaliPile Mini brings wear-status detection and non-contact temperature measurement together in our smallest CaliPile sensor, giving designers a compact way to support health-monitoring features and power management.”

The sensor is designed for direct exposure and greater resilience to heat flows unrelated to infrared radiation, such as those caused by touching the sensor or placing it near a heat source. This helps address temperature measurement challenges in compact consumer electronics.

CaliPile Mini is offered in two variants: TPiS 1C 0986 IRA and TPiS 1C 0987.
