Excelitas Technologies® Corp., a leading industrial technology manufacturer focused on delivering innovative, market-driven photonic solutions, is sponsoring the reforestation of woodlands near its newest facility in Göttingen, Germany. The project is one example of the company’s sustainability initiatives aimed at reducing its carbon footprint. Working with district forestry personnel, 40 employees of Excelitas’ Göttingen subsidiary, Qioptiq Photonics, recently planted 1,150 new trees in the 2.5-acre area.

According to a report published in Science magazine, reforestation is one of the most effective strategies for climate change mitigation. That’s because through photosynthesis, trees capture carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air (carbon sequestration) and they release oxygen into the air. One Tree Planted, a non-profit organization focused on global reforestation, estimates that the average tree absorbs an average of 22 pounds of carbon dioxide per year for the first 20 years of its life.

“As a company, Excelitas is committed to environmental sustainability and to improving the communities where we live and work, and our employees enthusiastically support these initiatives and the values driving them. Contributing to forest restoration gives our Göttingen team an opportunity to take local action on the global issue of climate change and to help reduce our carbon footprint – joining in Excelitas’ commitment to creating a better tomorrow,” said Site Director Frank Stiebert. “We’re proud of our employees’ dedication and we thank them for actively supporting this project.”

Excelitas promotes environmental sustainability through various initiatives worldwide. In Germany, the Qioptiq Photonics subsidiary, with operations in Göttingen, Feldkirchen, Regen, and Asslar, has been certified climate neutral since 2021. This requires an ongoing commitment and effort on three levels: performing scientific and quantifiable measurement of greenhouse gas emissions for all four operating sites; enacting programs and measures to reduce the carbon emissions and environmental impact of those sites; and supporting climate protection projects to offset our remaining greenhouse gas emissions.

The new Excelitas facility in Göttingen Germany, which opened in September 2021, was planned and built according to the latest energy efficiency standards. Notably, it has been equipped with a photovoltaic system and charging stations for electric vehicles. The Excelitas site in Wiesbaden Germany also installed a photovoltaic system in 2021.
