Motorized Variable Magnification Beam Expanders
LINOS® Motorized Variable Magnification Beam Expanders enable fully automated laser material processing systems, allowing maximum versatility in the design of laser systems. These beam expanders are optical systems that provide systems designers with flexible, high-performance solutions. Adjustable beam diameter and divergence provide precise control over focus size, focus position and beam propagation. For high-power and short-pulse laser applications, fully fused-silica designs are available, delivering excellent transmission and thermal resistance performance.
Excelitas offers standard versions of motorized variable beam expanders with fused-silica lenses. LINOS Beam Expanders are optimally used in combination with LINOS F-Theta-Ronar lenses.
Our latest motorized beam expanders are designed for precise, reliable operation and easy system integration. They are well suited for use in automated production environments as well as in application laboratories. Special low-absorption, high-transmission coatings are also available to support continuous variable magnification from 1× to 4× and 2× to 8×, covering wavelength ranges of 340–360 nm, 515–540 nm, and 1030–1080 nm.

The controller is fully integrated into the beam expander, with an option to choose between two electrical interfaces: Sub-D9/RS232 or Phoenix Contact/RS232.
The LINOS Motorized Variable Beam Expanders offer:
- Continuous variable magnification 1x ...4x or 2x ...8x for wavelength 340-360 nm, 515-540 nm or 1030-1080 nm
- Fused-silica designs
- Continuous variation of exit-beam divergence
- Software running on the Windows™ platform (Win10)
- Automatic change of magnification to reduce machine setup times
- Maintains laser-protection class during readjustment of the beam expander
- All-in-one design, controller integrated
- CE and ROHS conformIP 20
Software
The Windows™-based software, developed using LabVIEW, enables easy control of the motorized beam expander. After initialization, the desired expansion is achieved by adjusting two independent stepper motors. Lens positions for the magnification ranges of 1×–4× or 2×–8× are provided in tables for each motorized beam expander type. Up to ten individual presets can be stored. The beam expander can also be controlled directly under other operating systems via the serial interface (for example, using a terminal program). All serial interface commands are documented in the manual.
